Through My Eyes | Join us on Tuesday, May 16
Through My Eyes: A New Way to Look at Mental Illness 2017 focuses on suicide awareness and prevention. This year’s event is presented by Genesis Health System and hosted by the Vera French Foundation. The event will be held at the Figge Art Museum, located at 225 West Second Street in Davenport, Iowa.
In its third consecutive year, the purpose of this important event is to increase community education and awareness of mental health challenges while reducing the stigma associated with mental illness.
Continuing Education Portion
The event will begin with a continuing education session available to area healthcare providers. This educational opportunity is offered for free. Our speaker, Jess Fiedorowicz M.D., Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Epidemiology, and Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. His research focuses on excess mortality in bipolar disorder: cardiovascular disease and suicide, and he will present on Suicide Risk with Mixed States in Bipolar Disorder.
Event Program and Dinner (Dinner will be served at 7:00pm)
Our guest speaker, George Smith, founder of AdamFest, will share his personal story of hope and healing.
We will also view a portion of Mike Mickle’s compelling documentary, “If You Only Knew: The Journey Through Teen Depression and Suicide.” The Emmy-nominated documentary that delves into the issue of teen depression and suicide. We hear from parents who lost children, a young woman who attempted suicide numerous times before getting help, experts in the dangers of social media and therapists who help us recognize warning signs.
Please join us as we uncover the myths in our community surrounding suicide and sustain important Vera French programs that help to combat the devastating effects of this disease
